散歩で、道端に咲く祇園祭りの花を見つけた。
祭りの夏、民家の軒下に飾られる魔除けの檜扇花。
扇形の花びらに点々と広がる斑紋、何や人驚かし気な感じがする。
古代の勇者たちが、ジャワから海流に乗り、大陸沿いに九州南部北部へと航海していた。
長い航海で夜の闇に覆われた海を見つめて過ごすとき、深い海の闇から魔物悪霊が湧き上がるかと、恐怖を抱いたことだろう。
そんな時、己に勇気を植え付けるため、自身の顔や体に驚かし気な色で文様を描き、逆に相手を脅かそうとしたのかもしれない。
顔や体に色付き文様を描き魔除けとした鯨面や入れ墨も、陸に上がっては、何とも場違いな具合の悪いもに
なったのかもしれない。
そんな時、道端に咲く橙色花弁に斑紋の花、なんと鯨面花ではないかと思い、軒下に飾るようになったのではないか。
そんな古代人の思いにつながる祇園祭の檜扇花が、大陸の片隅に咲いていた。
遠い海洋民の記憶につながる祇園祭の檜扇花の花言葉は悪霊退散が似合うと思う。
